September 25th 2013, the award ceremony for the Competition of “Join the Spirit” in China was held at 15th Beijing International Exposition. The “DICP1502 Team for the Competition” (“DICP1502 Team”, hereafter),from Laboratory of Catalysts and New Materials (Group 1502, DICP), won the third prize in this competition. Guangyi Li and Shanshan Li presented the award ceremony. Guangyi Li delivered an award-winning speech and a brief introduction to the work of “DICP1502 Team”. Various honored guests also presented, including Mr Boloog (China CEO of EADS), Ms Barbara Charre (senior manager of international R & D cooperation, EADS) and Ms Veronica (vice CEO of Airbus corporate information). “DICP1502 Team” comprised an advisor professor, Dr. Ning Li, and two PhD students, Guangyi Li and Jinfan Yang. The team won the prize by their well-recognized work “Synthesis of jet fuel range alkanes with the platform chemicals from lignocellulose”. In this work, a series of routes for the synthesis of diesel or jet fuel range branched or cyclic alkanes were developed by the combination of C-C coupling reaction and hydrodeoxygenation from lignocellulose derived platform chemicals. The products as-obtained can be directly used as jet fuel or blended with conventional jet fuel without hydroisomerization. To date, “DICP1502 Team” have applied for six patents and published five academic papers. The “Join the Spirit” Competition in China was held by European Defence and Company (EADS) Innovation Works, the EADS group’s corporate research and technology arm, together with Airbus and ENN. It’s a competition for Chinese academic teams to come up with innovative concepts on new sustainable energies in the aviation field. EADS Innovations Works is a global network of seven transnational Technical capability centers that have the mission to identify new value-creating technologies and to develop technological skills and resources. The organization also operates EADS’ corporate research and technology laboratories that promote the group’s technical innovation potential with a focus on the long-term.
